SYNOPSISIn suburban Ontario in the 1970s, Elaine Star Smith grows up believing that silence is the price of love. Every summer, her family’s island cottage offers a refuge, where her grandmother asks a single question that quietly changes the course of her life. At eighteen, Elaine leaves for Montreal. Invited to front a 1920s blues band, she discovers that when she sings, she can finally have a voice. Reinventing herself as Luna Star, she finds herself in music but repeatedly loses herself in love, trading pieces of herself to the men who promise to help bring her songs into the world. Motherhood changes everything. When she recognizes the same patterns of control threatening her child, Luna finds the courage to fight back. Guided by music, mythology, ritual, nature, she learns to reclaim her authentic voice and break the generations of silence. Inspired by the emotional truths of the author’s life and imaginatively transformed into fiction, The Ballad of Luna Star is a lyrical heroine’s journey of healing, creativity, self-reclamation and finding her voice.
